Commercial Diving Services Pty Ltd have developed a strong work ethic and professional approach to the way they do business in the marine environment.  Always prepared to do more than is expected by their clients and ensuring that innovation is a part of their future direction in terms of technology, sustainability and the environment.

To this end, Commercial Diving Services Pty Ltd have developed Hull Surface Treatment (HST) technology with a view to changing the application of anti-fouling systems on Commercial shipping.

During the course of 2008 Commercial Diving Services Pty Ltd were nominated for no less than five (5) awards relating to their development of HST.  On every occasion this new and innovative technology received 1st Prize. They were:

The judges recognised the outstanding contribution and potential impact this technology would have, not only on the environment, but also in terms of the commercial sustainability.

Australian Business Awards – Innovation

This award acknowledges Commercial Diving Services as an industry leader for outstanding achievement in innovation and honours its professional contribution to the industry as a whole.

Integral Energy Illawarra Business Awards – Innovation

The judges recognised Commercial Diving Services for their outstanding contribution to a new, innovative and environmentally sustainable technology which has the potential to have a positive and dramatic impact on the environment and reduction of GHG’s.


Sustainable Shipping Awards, London 2009

In 2009 Commercial Diving Services Pty Ltd were nominated, and short-listed, for The Ocean Environmental Protection Award at the Sustainable Shipping Awards, London 2009.  Again, Hull Surface Treatment (HST) technology has been judged and shortlisted among four other finalists to be considered as the best and most innovative in their contribution to the reduction and prevention of pollution of the ocean by ships. Judged by a panel of international experts, this nomination truly underpins the significance of this technology.  On 15th July 2009 Commercial Diving Services were runner-up at the Sustainable Shipping Awards held in London UK.

LLoyd's List Asia Awards 2009

Commercial Diving Services Pty Ltd is delighted to announce that they were awarded 1st Prize at the Lloyd’s List Asia Awards in the category of ACHIEVEMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.  This award honours Commercial Diving Services for their dedication and commitment to environmental protection in the Asian maritime arena through their technical innovation in developing Hull Surface Treatment (HST) technology.
Held in Singapore at the Marina Mandarin Hotel on Thursday night 29 October, 2009 their innovative development of Hull Surface Treatment (HST) technology impressed a world class judging panel.

The award was accepted by Mr. Keith Johnson, Managing Director of Commercial Diving Services and inventor of HST, along with son Tim.
Hull Surface Treatment (HST) technology is a world class system designed to keep the underwater surface of commercial shipping free of fouling such as slime, algae and weed...effectively reducing fuel oil consumption, green-house gas emissions and biological invasion by imported marine pests.  The system is environmentally friendly and does not require diver intervention.  Hull Surface Treatment (HST) technology is an Australian innovation.

This most recent award is the 7th received by Commercial Diving Services in the past 18 months and underpins the importance of this outstanding technology in the Maritime Industry.

Seatrade Asia Awards

Hull Surface Treatment technology has been selected as a finalist in the category of Environmental Protection Award at the Seatrade Asia Awards 2010.  Following an overwhelming number of entries for the 3rd Seatrade Asia Awards, the judging process is now complete.

The evening will see a full-house gathering of key shipping executives from Singapore and around the world, honouring the winners and celebrating the successes of the maritime industry.  This prestigious event will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel, Island Ballroom, Singapore on 26 April, 2010.

The judging panel who selected the finalists consist of an impressive representation of industry Generals, and are:

Seatrade China Awards

Commercial Diving Services Australia are delighted to announce that their multi-award winning HULL SURFACE TREATMENT (HST) technology was nominated and subsequently selected as a finalist in categories of The Environmental Protection Award and The Technical Innovation Award at the SEATRADE CHINA AWARDS 2010, held in Dalian China on 13 October, 2010.

The SEATRADE CHINA AWARDS were introduced with the aim of honouring and celebrating business excellence, best practice and innovation across various sectors of the China Maritime Industry. The Environmental Protection Award recognises new technology and/or significant improvements to existing technology that can reduce or prevent maritime and atmospheric pollution or assist in the clean-up of same AND The Technical Innovation Award recognises a project or product with the potential to significantly improve efficiency of any aspects of ship operations with regard to originality, imagination and perceived practicality of the product.

The panel of esteemed judges included:

  • Dr. Bjorn Kjerfve, President World Maritime University.
  • Mr. Zhushi Li, Vice President, China Association of the National Ship Building Industries.
  • Mr. Kejun Li, Chairman & President, China Classification Society.
  • Mr. Peiting Sun, Professor and Vice President of Dalian Maritime University.
  • Mr. Ueda NoBoru, Chairman of IACS Council.
  • Mr. Liangzhong Xing, Vice Director, China Ports & Harbours Association.

Once again, HST has been assessed and recognised as a significant technical and environmental innovation with the potential to deliver real and meaningful results in the fight against bio-fouling, GHG’s and invasive species.  The cost of which is more than compensated through fuel savings and extended dry-dock intervals. In fact, HST delivers an extraordinarily high benefit to cost ratio.
